U zajedničkoj organizaciji Zavoda za molekularnu biologiju IRB-a, Programa Molekularne osnove bioloških procesa i Hrvatske udruge genetičkih inženjera održat će se predavanje Dr. Sujith Puthiyaveetil na temu "Two-component systems of chloroplasts: vital legacy of a bacterial past". Predavanje će se održeti u srijedu, 3. ožujka 2010. u 15 sati na Institutu “Ruđer Bošković”, Bijenička 54, Zagreb, u seminarskoj dvorani Zavoda za molekularnu biologiju (V krilo, soba 201).

TWO-COMPONENR SYSTEMS OF CHLOROPLASTS: VITAL LEGACY OF BACTERIAL PAST
Two-component systems, containing sensor histidine kinases and response regulators, are ubiquitous signal transducers in bacteria. Once thought to be a defining feature of prokaryotes, these signalling systems have now been identified and described also in eukaryotes. Chloroplasts – the sites of photosynthesis in plants and algae – harbour two-component systems. Two-component systems of chloroplasts are functional relics from bacterial ancestors – the endosymbiotic cyanobacteria to whom chloroplasts owe their origin. Chloroplasts employ two-component systems to connect photosynthetic electron transport to chloroplast gene transcription. Chloroplast sensor kinases monitor the flux of photosynthetic electron transport, and pass this information on to chloroplast response regulators, which, when required, selectively turn chloroplast genes on and off. This feedback regulation brings about homeostasis in chloroplast and cellular function. The survival of bacterial two-component systems in chloroplasts and the coupling they provide between electron transport and gene expression are important predictions of a hypothesis that explains why chloroplasts need a genome..
